About MemeOver
MemeOver — Your Discord memes, right on your screen
MemeOver brings your Discord server to life on your friends’ screens. Images, GIFs, videos, sounds, stickers, messages and reactions appear live in a transparent desktop overlay while you play, watch something together or hang out.
Inspired by Cacabox’s LiveChat, MemeOver is a standalone application: no streaming software or live broadcast is required.
Free and open source, MemeOver is available on Windows, macOS and Linux.
How does it work?
MemeOver combines a Discord bot with a desktop application:
- An administrator invites the bot to the server and runs
/memeover setup. - They can select a specific channel with
/memeover setup #channel. Without a channel selection, the bot watches the channels it can access. - Anyone who wants to receive content installs the desktop application.
- They run
/memeover tokento get a setup code in a reply only they can see, then paste it into the application. - Content shared in watched channels is forwarded to connected desktop applications and displayed according to each participant’s preferences.
Members send content through Discord. The desktop application is required to receive it on screen.
Images, videos, sounds and messages
- Display images, animated GIFs, videos and audio files shared on Discord.
- Support compatible Discord stickers, excluding the Lottie format.
- Detect attachments, embedded media and compatible direct media links.
- Receive supported media from Discord, Tenor, Giphy, KLIPY and compatible direct Imgur links.
- Play GIFs that Discord delivers as video.
- Display short messages and media captions, with text limited to approximately 140 characters.
- Show the sender’s name and avatar on regular submissions.
An overlay that fits your screen
Each participant customizes their own display:
- Nine preset positions with fine horizontal and vertical adjustments.
- Monitor selection for multi-monitor setups.
- Adjustable media size while preserving aspect ratio.
- Media opacity and volume controls for videos and audio.
- Configurable display duration.
- An option to let videos and audio finish before moving to the next item.
- Text size, color and placement above, below or over the media.
- An optional background with customizable color, opacity and padding.
- Border color, opacity, thickness and rounded corners.
- A placement preview with portrait, landscape and square media.
The transparent overlay lets clicks pass through, so you can keep using the applications underneath.
Bring reactions to life
Reactions added to messages in watched channels can appear as animated emojis across your screen.
- Standard emojis and custom Discord emojis, including animated ones.
- Six animations: straight, serpentine, side bounce, drifting confetti, pop and float, and firework.
- A random mode to vary the effects.
- Adjustable emoji size, opacity and animation duration.
- Floating reactions can be enabled or disabled independently.
Stay in control of what you receive
Each participant manages their own preferences:
- Enable or disable images, GIFs, videos, audio, text and stickers separately.
- Hide specific authors from your overlay and unhide them whenever you want.
- Choose to hide anonymous submissions.
- Locally show or hide content from bots, applications and webhooks when the server allows them.
- Limit pending items per person to prevent one participant from taking over the queue.
- Skip the current item or clear the queue.
- Show, reload or close the overlay from the settings.
Send a meme without showing your name
Use /memeover secret to send an attachment or compatible media link, with an optional caption, to connected overlays.
The sender’s name and avatar are hidden on screen. This feature controls the overlay display and does not guarantee anonymity from Discord or the bot operator.
Save, share and replay
- Create multiple overlay profiles for different situations.
- Apply, update, delete, import and export profiles.
- Share visual preferences without including your Discord connection credentials.
- Browse a local history of the last 50 displayed items.
- Replay content that is still available.
- Clear your history or remove media with expired Discord links, manually or automatically.
Built for everyday use
- Guided first-time setup.
- French and English interface.
- Light and dark themes.
- System tray operation.
- Optional automatic startup when you sign in.
- Connection status, overlay status and connected participant indicators.
- Automatic reconnection after temporary interruptions.
- Manual update checks or automatic background downloads, with updates applied on the next launch.
Hosted bot or self-hosting
Use the hosted bot to get started quickly, or host your own instance.
The Server tab guides you through configuring your own Discord bot, installing the server and its dependencies, and starting, stopping or restarting it. You can also check its status and logs, then share the connection code with your friends.
Docker deployment and connections to a custom server address are also supported.
